Tummy Time & Early Development

Supervised, awake tummy time helps babies build neck, shoulder, and upper-body strength while giving the back of the head a break from pressure. It does not have to begin on the floor.

Gentle ways to begin

• Chest-to-chest while you are awake and reclined

• Across your lap with close supervision

• On a firm floor surface at your baby’s level

• With a small rolled towel for support only when appropriate and while directly supervised

Make it manageable

Try short, frequent sessions when your baby is calm and alert. Get face-to-face, use a mirror or toy, and change the direction you approach from. Build gradually instead of pushing through distress.

Tummy time and sleep are different

Tummy time is only for awake, directly supervised practice. Place your baby on their back for every sleep on a firm, flat sleep surface with no loose items, following current safe-sleep guidance.

Ask your child’s healthcare professional for individualized advice if your baby has breathing concerns, significant reflux, pain, limited movement, developmental concerns, or a medical condition that changes positioning recommendations.
